River Ouse

Brief description of fishery:

This section of the River Ouse runs from the woods above Paxhill Park Golf Course downstream to the end of the first field below East Mascalls road bridge and then continues through Henfield Wood down to our waters at the Sloop. Upstream from the road bridge, the club holds the fishing rights to both sides of the river, with access to the north bank from East Mascalls and from Lindfield. Access upstream of the south bank is from East Mascalls. Downstream from the road bridge, the Society has the rights to both sides of the river but apart from the pool the banks are very steep on the north bank and members normally fish from the more accessible south bank. The banks vary in height both above and below the bridge and are not recommended for the infirm.

The river’s depth and flow varies from slow and deep to fast and shallow with occasional deep pools. The stretch fishes well all year round. The river passes through a deep pool below the bridge and contains a large variety of good quality fish. Access to the pool is restricted to two/three swims only and is not suitable for the young or infirm. This stretch of river is our prime location for Barbel and has produced the club record numerous times, it also contains some very large Chub.

Location: What three words: ///shortcuts.customers.filer Address: Mascalls Ln, Lindfield, Haywards Heath RH16 2QN

Parking: Park carefully near bridge. Access: via the kissing gate alongside the bridge for S. bank upstream; and over fence at the opposite end of the bridge and through the padlocked gate for N. bank upstream to Lindfield. Members should keep as close to the river as possible whilst in the first field. For downstream N. bank – pool only and downstream S. bank, via gaps at either side of bridge.

Opening Times: 16th of June to 14th of March unless members have purchased a Trout permit. Fishing the bridge pool is still not allowed with a Trout permit between the 15th March and 15th of June

Tips: Ledgered meat, sweetcorn, pellet and paste baits account for the larger Chub and Barbel and if that’s not working you could try rolling meat baits through the swim or reverting to the old favorite bread flake for the chub. The dace and other smaller fish can be caught on maggots, the river is narrow and overgrown in section here so trotting a float is tricky and most anglers stick to ledgered baits. A roving approach is often best deployed at this water.

Venue Specific Rules

Only one rod to be used by members at any time

Only two members may fish the bridge pool at any one time

Minimum 12lb breaking strain line, unhooking mat and a landing net of at least 30inches must be used when fishing for Barbel in the bridge pool

Brief description of fishery:

This section of the River Ouse is one of the Society’s most prolific stretches of river. It meanders for approximately 1 mile from the bottom of our waters at Henfield Wood, down past the outfall to the roadbridge, it the continues downstream for about a mile on both the river and canal. The banks vary in height in some places which makes access to many areas not really suitable for infirm or disabled anglers.

The river’s depth and flow varies from slow and deep from the outfall to fast and shallow through the field section, with occasional deep pools. The stretch fishes well all year round. The old Ouse Canal runs from just above the weir at the top of the Dave Knight stretch and and runs for about a mile below the Sloop Inn and also fishes well.

Location: What three words: ///blueberry.bleaker.mildest Address: Sloop Ln, Haywards Heath RH17 7NP

Parking: Parking is on verges. Do not park in the pub car park or the access lanes to farm or Works. Access (no vehicles): via lane opp. pub for canal and from weir S. bank only upstream to E. Mascalls and footbridge to ‘Dave Knight’ stretch (also known as the Over 60s stretch); via farm gate opp. pub to ‘Dave Knight’ stretch only; via farm track beside canal for S. bank downstream and canal. Parking allowed in the Sloop Inn top carpark. The north bank of the Dave Knight stretch can also be fished, access is via the gate about 20yds past the bridge.

Opening Times: 16th of June to 14th of March, unless member has purchased a Trout permit.

Tips: Trotting with maggot’s accounts for many of the smaller species in this stretch whilst the big Chub and Barbel respond best to light link ledger techniques coupled with a roving approach. The usual baits like pellet, meat, bread and pastes all work well. Also try rolling meat if you are struggling for a bite. The canal can produce some monster Gudgeon and Barbel have also come out of here in recent times.

Brief description of fishery:

The club has access to the north bank of the Lindfield stretch of the River Ouse. Access to the north bank is on either side of the bridge. Our fishing starts approximately 1 mile upstream from the road bridge and then continues downstream through fields and woods on below the old Pimms Lock through Paxhill Golf Course (where we can fish) and down via the field now owned by John Bastable (keeping as close to the river as possible through this field) to East Mascalls Bridge

The river runs slow for the stretch down to the lock gates and then runs fast and shallow down to East Mascalls. The depth varies above the lock gates, averaging 5ft but running much deeper in parts due to a flood relief channel. The river is very wide along this stretch and affords good access from the fields.

Location: What three words: //pods.nutty.shorthand Address: Haywards Heath RH16 2RE

Parking: Off-road parking only. Access: via gate adjacent Bridge Cottage for N. bank upstream; via gate by pillbox for N. bank downstream to E. Mascalls (yes, the golf course bank is ours).

Opening Times: 16th of June to 14th of March unless a Trout permit has been purchased.

Tips: Best baits are conventional, from bread flake and sweet corn through to maggot, worm and caster. Ledgered feeder generally accounts for the bigger fish whilst trotting a waggler or stick float will work for the smaller species.

Brief description of fishery:

The club has recently regained control of the fishing rights on this length which stretches for about a mile downstream from the bridge, on the right hand bank, as far as our boundary sign and as far as we are aware it has not been fished between 2000 and 2012. The river runs rather shallow in places but there are quite a few deeper, slower swims all along the length. It contains most species of freshwater fish including chub, dace, roach, perch, barbel, pike and large carp with also the occasional sea trout.  The banks are rather steep and overgrown in most places and care will need to be taken by anyone fishing this water, this is defiantly one for the angler who likes exploring wild unkempt waters but there are some big fish to reward those who persevere.

Location: What three words: ///admire.invoices.sugar Address: Haywards Heath RH16 2RE

Parking: Take the A272 from Haywards Heath through Scaynes Hill to North Chailey. Turn left onto the A275 to Sheffield Park, about 2 Miles. Parking is through a padlocked gate on the right about 100 yards on the Chailey (South) side of the bridge. Please Park alongside the hedge after passing through a second gate on the left immediately inside the gate off the road.

Opening Times: 16th of June to 14th of March. This also applies to those members holding a Trout permit

Tips: Trotting a float will be very difficult due to the restricted bank access so ledgered are definitely the way forward with the usual maggot, bread and worm for the smaller fish whilst pellets, sweetcorn, meat and pastes will do for the larger fish.

Tips: Maggot, Casters, Luncheon meat, corn, bread and Hemp are best for general fishing either trotting with a stick float or using a feeder. Sink and draw with Sprat has accounted for some good pike and the usual boilie baits can be used for the big carp in this stretch

This stretch of the Sussex Ouse extends for about 3 miles and has many features, ranging from weir pools through to shallow gravel beds opening to deeper pools and then on to slow moving deep glides.
Vehicle access points to the river are limited, so travelling light is the key to success.
